CHAPTER SIX

I must resist growling at the next suns rising because I do not want Hujun to think I am not mentally stable enough to approach the outsiders. If, by some chance, he does agree to allow Kansas to come, I need to be there to protect her. I never imagined Kansas wanting to take part in such a dangerous journey. Perhaps, she is growing stronger. Perhaps, she trusts that I will protect her. Or, more likely, she is foolish and does not understand the danger. Even now, as we approach the huddled group of my brothers and their human mates, she practically hums with excitement. This is all a game to her, maybe. I suppose that’s fine because I will never let anything bad to happen to her.

I am prepared to die for this female, but hopefully, it will not come to that.

And though I am trying to give the semblance of being frustrated, a small part of me is quite pleased with Kansas’ behavior. The night before, she did not push me. She did not ask questions or ask me to say things that I am not ready to answer out loud. I think she understands that my feelings will be made more apparent once I know she is completely safe. Whatever I think when it comes to the outsiders, she will not force me to speak on it until we are back at the lairs with Prince Korben and the rest of my brothers. And I am relieved about that.

The group is surprisingly large on this day, many of the human females sitting with their sprogs, or allowing them to roam a few hands away. Most are not independent with their movement, but Prince Korben’s daughter, Kyeth, appears to be set on making his mother and father crazy. It’s hard to see my prince in this role, but for the first time, I consider what it would be like if that were to be me. Will I be a good father like Prince Korben? Will I have a mixed species sprog one day? Will it be a male or female? Will it bear a stronger resemblance to Kansas or myself? Would she even want that with me?

I glance down, wondering if she’s thinking the same thing, but of course, her eyes are ahead, probably seeking out her closest female companions; Alaska, Dakota, and Arizona. They are there, of course, but as far as I remember, only the tall, long yellow-haired one will be coming on this journey with her mate Taylis. Several members of the group lift their heads as we approach, and I must say, part of me considers turning right back around, tying Kansas to the bed, and leaving her until I return from the trip

My scales rise when Hujun catches my attention. “Brother. You have come at last. It is time to get started then.” He beckons both myself and Kansas over, and I’m somewhat annoyed when she’s a few hands away from me.
